“AC Milan is delighted to announce that Rossoneri coach, Gennaro Gattuso, has extended his contract with the club to 30th June 2021. Rino Gattuso’s priority has always been the team, putting it before anything else. When asked about his contract renewal, he expected it to happen, but he always showed he was not in a hurry. He never hid the dream of staying for a long time at AC Milan: a dream that, today, came true. Since the first day he became the first team coach, Rino worked with great enthusiasm and passion; and now, consequently, he has extended his contract with the Rossoneri until 30th June, 2021. There are no surprises, as everyone was already expecting this news, but now it’s official. The Red and Blacks are [and remain] in Rino’s hands!” Milan stated on their official website
Gattuso, who spent 12 seasons at AC Milan as a player and winning two Serie A titles, truly transformed the team this season by leading the club to their recent 10-game unbeaten streak in Serie A before they suffered a 1-3 loss to Juventus last weekend.
Late last year, the 40-year-old coach was initially given a contract until the end of the season and got a promotion from being a youth team coach to replace sacked Vincenzo Montellan in November.
“I am very proud, and beyond that, there is great responsibility from the staff, because it is an honor to train this club. It is also difficult, because we have to do things properly, we have to achieve results, so we are very proud but there is also a lot of work to do. I hope I can stay as long as possible, I hope I can win something with these colors, with this club, because it deserves it, it has been for so many years a club that represented football in the world, and I repeat, I am very proud and I hope I can do things properly”
Moving forward, Milan will try to secure their place in the Champions League with eight games left, trailing eight points on their city rivals Inter Milan. In addition, they are also fighting for a place in the Europa League.
