NBA Today: Lakers blew late lead over Blazers to remain winless

Damian Lillard’s heroic 41 points gave the Lakers a third loss in a row. Russell Westbrook’s poor shooting continues to haunt the Laker’s progress. Follow for more NBA mobile news and updates here!

The struggles at the three point land remain the vulnerability of Lakers on offense, added to the fact that their third star Russell Westbrook is very consistent with his poor shooting, 4 for 26 (15.4%) in his last two games so far in this young season. Lebron James and Anthony Davis are still carrying the team. James scored 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists but missed the late jumper to send the game into overtime, while Davis scored a double-double effort with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Lakers are doing great on the defensive ends, clogging the offensive effort of their opponent as they created a whooping 19 turnovers and 9 steals to keep them afloat at the game – this lives up to how Darvin Ham advertised the team’s defense. However, the lack of offense has also been clogging the improvement of the team and it really shows at the game against the Blazers.

Major Observations

The major problem of the Lakers this season is their poor shooting at the three point land, and Blazers took advantage of that by adjusting their defense to 2-3 zone which is designed to force the opponent to shoot jumpers and threes. Without an elite shooter on Lakers’ rosters, it forces the players to shoot threes despite it being outside of their capabilities like Russell Westbrook.

For now, the third option for the team is the new Laker Lonnie Walker IV as he ended the game with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist. Anthony Davis is living up to his value after blockbuster trades for youngsters of Lakers (Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball) as he continued to help Lebron James carry the team and keep the defensive presence inside the paint solid for the Lakers. Hopefully, the team finds a bunch of solutions to improve their 20% three point shooting, or they will continue the struggle throughout the season.

So far, the Portland Trailblazers are exceeding low expectations each game passes. After the trade last season that sent CJ McCollum to the Pelicans, the team is expected to have a rebuilding era coming into the 2022-2023 season. However, Anfernee Simons took the spot that McCollum left and became the Robin that Lillard is looking for to keep the team as competitive as possible.

The team will play another solid Western opponent in the Denver Nuggets and will have a showdown to the reigning MVP Nikola Jokic, the healthy Jamal Murray and Michael porter Jr.
