Player of the Match: Cristiano Ronaldo 65’ (P)

Brazil vs. Serbia

Result: Brazil 2 – 0 Serbia

Summary: Serbia was in a state of shock after the game, they were toothless as they were unable to answer the strong backlines of Brazil. It was an intense matchup in the first half, as both sides were unable to score. The first goal of the match came in the 62nd minute, Richarlison took advantage of the actions and mismatches inside the box, he sent the ball to the net and past Vanka Milinkovic-Savic. Richarlison got the second and winning goal with an acrobatic volley in the 73rd minute. Brazil stretched their unbeaten opening game in the last 20 editions of the World Cup (W17, D3), their first being only Spain in 1934. Serbia, meanwhile, suffers their eight losses in the last 10 matches at the World Cup.

Player of the Match: Richarlison 62’, 73’

Biggest Winner: Portugal

This is a much-needed win for the Selecao and for Cristiano Ronaldo who recently parted ways with his beloved club Manchester United. Ghana has a strong and balanced squad, so edging this team is monumental and a great advantage for Portugal looking to sweep the group stage. Joao Felix and Rafael Leao’s first goal in the World Cup is also remarkable, now that they have all the motivation and confidence, giving Portugal and Fernando Santos’ squad an obvious edge against Uruguay and Korea Republic.

Biggest Loser: Serbia

Serbia had a pretty strong lineup, as a matter of fact their lineups for their goalkeepers are stacked: Dmitrovic playing for Sevilla, Milinkovic-Savic for Torino, and Rajkovic for Mallorca. But none of them performed well and did not even challenge the stacked strikers and forwards of the Brazilians. Given the fact that some underdog teams are making noises, upsetting contenders like Japan beat Germany and Saudi Arabia stuns Argentina. With this defeat, the team now are facing heavy adversity of losing another match against Cameroon and potentially to be routed by Switzerland and will exit the World Cup winless.

Player of the Day: Richarlison 62’, 73’

Richarlison really did great for Brazil on their opening day. He was the one who uplifted the team in the second half and scored two goals in crunch time. With his two consecutive goals, he helped Brazil to extend their unbeaten streak in their World Cup opening match. His impressive performance puts Brazil ahead in the whole tournament and makes the expectations and odds much higher. Richarlison and Brazil are on their way to sweep the Group stage and rout the knockout stage all the way to lifting the World Cup trophy since 2002.
